This video is bound to provoke and trigger a wide range of responses from your FDC team. If you are a child welfare social worker, maybe you have moved children from one foster home to another, and have had them pack up their belongings in a plastic trash bag. Or maybe you have struggled with a parent or child’s angry outburst only to realize later it was a trigger response to trauma (vs. being disrespectful, non-compliant, not ready for help, etc). As heavy as this video is, there is hope for this young girl. And it starts with people who do not give up on you.
As FDC professionals, we are in the hope business (“those glimmers of light”) – helping children, parents, and families see the bright “summer” come into their lives. Please feel free to post a comment about what struck you either visually or in the narrative of this story. This video may also be used as a resource in training foster parents or caretakers.
“It would be impossible to fully understand the life and emotions of a child going through the foster care system, but this short narrative film portrays that saga in a poetic light, with brushes of fear, anger, sadness, and a tiny bit of hope.” -Santa Barbara Independent
